Loxton Square official opening - 27/01/2017

A development of new homes for affordable rent has been officially opened in Bristol.

The 17 new homes, at Loxton Square, Hengrove, were developed by local housing association Solon, which part funded the scheme with the Government’s Homes & Communities Agency on land provided by Bristol City Council.  The new homes were built to a high standard including lifetime homes and Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3, by Speller Metcalfe.

Paul Ville, Solon Housing Chief Executive, thanked Bristol for providing the land at nil cost and Speller Metcalfe for a high quality build.  He noted that the new much needed homes for local people were the outcome of a productive partnership between Solon, the Council, the contractor and the HCA.  Solon has invested considerable effort and significant additional money into the project to make it work.  “We would like to provide many more affordable homes like this in Bristol” he said. “I am confident that this will happen if the Council continues to work collaboratively with Solon, and continues to value and nurture this partnership”.

Cllr Paul Smith, Bristol City Council’s cabinet member for Homes & Communities, congratulated Solon and Speller Metcalfe on the scheme, which makes an important contribution to local affordable housing for rent.  He noted that, “There is a pressing and growing need for more affordable housing in Bristol.  I hope that the positive relationship and partnership working between the City Council and Solon will be maintained, and that we will open many more important schemes like this one in the future”.

Steve Speller, Joint owner of Speller Metcalfe, said: “As well as building new homes of excellent quality, we helped promote new opportunities and contributed to our local economy by employing sub-contractors and suppliers within 30 miles of site.”
