Board Member with HR Experience


What is Solon about?
Solon is an independent, local-controlled and community focused housing association. We provide 1,280 homes in Bristol and South Gloucestershire mainly for affordable rent. We aim to be a local provider of exceptional housing, expertly-led, addressing a wide range of diverse needs, providing homes people want to live in and delivering great customer service. We are financially strong, with an annual turnover of appox. £7m, a healthy surplus, the capacity to produce new homes and a development programme.

The Board
Solon is governed by a Board comprising 12 voluntary (non-executive) members, who set overall vision and strategy, oversee performance and provide support and guidance to the executive team. Between them, Board members need to have the wide range of skills needed to run a successful social housing business. They also share our values and are committed to our purpose as a not-for-profit, charitable housing association.

 
Becoming a Board Member
We are currently seeking to recruit Board Members with HR skills, and, ideally some experience at a senior level in the commercial, housing association or public sector, who can add to the range of HR, commercial and customer service skills on the board. You should have the following strengths:
  • Think and operate strategically.
  • Listening and communication skills.
  • Ability to foster effective relationships and work well in a team
  • Understanding and experience of delivering an HR service.
Our Board Members need to be able to devote sufficient time to Solon business. As a minimum, this means attendance at approximately one evening Board meeting every two months, plus occasional other meetings and events.

In exchange, you will build on your experience in the strategic management of an important local social business, receive appropriate induction and support, and benefit from an opportunity for personal development whilst making an important contribution to improving peoples' lives.

We do not pay our Board members, but we do meet reasonable expenses for attending meetings.

We are keen to ensure that our Board reflects our resident profile and the local community so we particularly welcome applications from under-represented groups - currently members of local BME communities and younger people. We are also keen to recruit more women to the Board.
